Pui was wandering alone through Bangkok, barking at strangers and sniffing around garbage dumps, when he discovered a strange package. The four-legged hero recognized the plastic bag as something interesting, carefully taking its handles between his teeth and pulling it out of the trash can to bring it home to his family. In 2013, Pui, a two-year-old Thai Bangkaew, was roaming the streets of his community near Bangkok, sniffing through household waste. The gentle little red dog came across a white plastic bag filled with something that seemed to be moving.
Carefully, Pui lifted the bag from the garbage dump, carried it by its handles, and brought it to his owner, Gumnerd Thongmak. At home, he placed the bag on the porch and barked loudly to get his owner’s attention. According to the Bangkok Post, Thongmak’s 12-year-old niece, Sudarat, was the first to respond to Pui’s urgent calls. She hurried to the porch, impatiently opened the package he had brought her, and called out in shock for her mother.
Inside the plastic bag was a newborn baby, with its umbilical cord still attached.
Sudarat’s parents immediately took the weak little baby to the hospital, where doctors determined it was born about two months prematurely and weighed only 4 pounds and 8 ounces. The baby received oxygen and other medical care at the hospital and survived this tragic ordeal.
«It was fortunate that little Pui found the baby. It was a surprise for us because little Pui had never brought anything home, only barked when he went out for a walk,» said Sudarat’s mother, Pummarat, who expressed interest in adopting the child. «It must have been fate that brought us together.»
After being celebrated as a hero for saving the little girl’s life, Pui received a leather collar and a medal from the local Red Cross chapter.
The Thongmaks also received $300 to support their furry hero and the three other dogs living in the house. For now, the identity of the person who adopted the baby and who the mother is remains unknown.
